Engineering Portfolio (School Assignment)
Hi my name is Alexander Selwa and I am a first year Engineering Science student. This website was created for a school assignment. It presents a collection of artifacts in aims of communicating my personal process of engineering design. Before I go any further, let me clarify what I mean by engineering design: finding a practical solution to a problem by applying theory, where the solution is measured by an engineering argument.
Ever since I was little, I always had an interest in the way things worked. As I went through school I excelled in math and science, and naturally was attracted to engineering. And so I ended up here in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto. Throughout my first year I have gained a great deal of engineering experience. In addition to school assignments, I joined the Human Powered Vehicle Design Team, which exposed me to a more practical side of design. I am proud to say that I have achieved more than I could have imagined 8 months ago before the school year started. Whether it be the raccoon-proof green bin or the computational study on airfoils, it is clear that I have been participating in engineering design.
During my first year, I have developed a personal process of engineering design. I have had a lot of success with the idea generation and modeling side of the process and would consider it to be my strength. What I would like to improve on in the future is the application of theory to aid in the testing and analysis environment. I am often forced to simplify many design decisions due to my limited knowledge and experience with a variety of tools. The artifacts displayed on the rest of the site better describe what I have achieved and where I am in terms of my own engineering design process.
